The EUTOPIA alliance launched the EUTOPIA Education Forum and outlined the contours of its next strategic phase during EUTOPIA Week in Gothenburg. The new EUTOPIA Education Forum is intended to strengthen cooperation in education between the partner universities. VUB Rector and Chair of the EUTOPIA Board of Presidents Jan Danckaert said: "Research pushes the boundaries of our knowledge. Education passes on that knowledge, questions it and renews it."
From 28 June to 1 July, the University of Gothenburg brought together representatives of the ten EUTOPIA universities, students, researchers, lecturers, professional staff and international partners. Under the theme Finding Balance. Building Futures, the central question was how universities can reconcile innovation and international ambition with attention to the wellbeing of students, researchers and staff.
During the opening ceremony, VUB Rector Jan Danckaert, Chair of the EUTOPIA Board of Presidents, reflected on seven years of cooperation within the alliance. He emphasised the importance of academic freedom, European cooperation and international partnerships in a rapidly changing world. "Governments may disagree. Political tensions may rise. Yet researchers continue to collaborate, scientists continue to exchange ideas, and students continue to learn from one another."

Danckaert also referred to a number of the alliance's concrete achievements. Through the Connected Communities, students and lecturers from the partner universities work together on themes such as artificial intelligence, global health and international security. In addition, the fourth EUTOPIA Research Days featured prominently during EUTOPIA Week, bringing together researchers from different disciplines, while the Young Leaders Academy symposium provided an opportunity for future academic leaders from across the alliance to exchange experiences and insights.
Mattia Bellotti
EUTOPIA Secretary-General Mattia Bellotti also looked ahead. According to him, the alliance faces the challenge of embedding its activities more firmly within the partner universities in the coming years, while at the same time further expanding its international cooperation. This dual ambition lies at the heart of the preparations for EUTOPIA's next strategic phase. Bellotti said: "We gather here with a shared conviction: EUTOPIA is a long-term commitment to shaping the future of higher education in Europe and beyond."
An important innovation during the meeting was the first edition of the EUTOPIA Education Forum. The new platform brings together lecturers, educational leaders and academic leaders to strengthen cooperation in education. Unlike a traditional consultation forum, it is primarily intended to lead to concrete joint initiatives that can be implemented across the alliance.
EUTOPIA
EUTOPIA is an alliance of ten European universities that collaborate on education, research and societal impact. Through joint degree programmes, research initiatives and mobility schemes, the alliance aims to create a more integrated European higher education area. EUTOPIA Week is one of the most important moments of consultation during the year and is organised in turn by the partner universities.
In addition to the ten European partner universities, representatives of EUTOPIA's international partner institutions also took part in the meeting, namely Universidad de los Andes (Colombia), Arizona State University (United States), Kyungpook National University (South Korea), Monash University (Australia), Université Internationale de Rabat (Morocco) and Stellenbosch University (South Africa).
