50 years of VUB, 185 years of ULB and VUB. Also: 50 years of freedom, 185 years of connection. How to celebrate that in a memorable way? The VUB and ULB decided to work together and drew up a full festive calendar. The joint academic opening at Parc du Cinquantenaire on Friday, 20 September, marks the beginning of the festive year. Right in the middle of the city centre. And what a start it will be! The official ceremony will quickly transform into a festival. Brussels artists will get this party started: L’Or Du Commun, Blu Samu, DJ Fox Adam, Straz, Kara and the VUB Orchestra.

On Friday, 20 September, Parc du Cinquantenaire will be the place to be for the academic opening of the Université libre de Bruxelles and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. On the occasion of their 185th and 50th anniversary, the universities will change locations and celebrate at the green Parc du Cinquantenaire/Jubelpark, all of this in the presence of His Majesty King Filip of Belgium.

Strong Brussels line-up

After the traditional speeches, we will quickly move on to the musical part of the academic opening. From 15:00 to 21:00, bands like the VUB Orchestra, L’Or Du Commun, Blu Samu, Straz, Kara en DJ Fox Adam will pull out all the stops.

VUB’s symphonic orchestra, including students, alumni, university staff and VUB sympathizers, will add lustre to the official ceremony. L’Or Du Commun is a sensational Brussels hip-hop trio. At the beginning of 2019, they broke through at home and abroad. Blu Samu recently moved from Borgerhout to Brussels and won over the entire crowd at the Pukkelpop festival this summer. Straz, Kara and the final act DJ Fox Adam are young artists who combine their music career with studies at ULB. (Continue reading underneath the image)
