Our commuting becomes safer and more pleasant thanks to the ambitions of VUB, the Brussels Region and NMBAS. Within the framework of the Mobility Week (16 - 22 Sep 20), several events are planned, an overview in a nutshell.
Stad30, also the Pleinlaan
On 1 January 2021, 30 km/h will become the rule in the Brussels-Capital Region and no longer the exception. This is a relief for road safety on the Pleinlaan. The VUB had been requesting this for a long time. Triomflaan will remain 50 km/h as a major axis. The area around Brussels Health Campus will become entirely zone 30.
Cycling out of the corona crisis
- Bicycle paths
The bicycle seems to be a keeper in Brussels. On the list of bottlenecks towards the VUB, bicycle safety on the General Jacqueslaan (near the station) was a priority. Directly followed by the Fraiteurbrug on the VUB-Solbosch route. And look:
The General Jacqueslaan was given a temporary cycle path and the permit application for a permanent cycle path has been started.
The Fraiteurbrug will be widened with a footpath and cycle path, the construction works will be finished at the end of October. Until then all traffic, including bus 71, will be diverted.
In Jette, the F212 Asse-Brussels car-free cycle path runs from Zellik station, along the Green Energy Park to the Bosstraat.
- Bicycle allowance
From 2020 onwards, the bicycle allowance will be the tax-free maximum, i.e. 24ct/km. Applications must be submitted between 1 November and 31 December 2020, unless you are leaving the VUB. Via Service Now you will find the application procedure and all necessary forms.
- Bicycle repairs
FietspuntVUB is working coronaproof, which means that you can't fix your bike yourself in the studio for a while. However, you can have your bicycle repaired during opening hours, at 10euro/quarter.
Where can I get it fixed? Triomflaan 40 - 1160 Oudergem
Opening hours? Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 5.30 p.m., Fridays from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
- FietspuntVUB-only moment: Friday 2/10/2020, 11-14h
This academic year, there will be FietspuntVUB-only moments. With an appointment, you can drop off your bike and VUB will pay the cost of the bicycle mechanic. Material costs will still be at your expense.
Register for a visit on Friday 2/10/2020 by sending an e-mail to mobiliteitscoordinator@vub.be with a clear description of the necessary repairs and photos where necessary.
- Vélofixer on Brussels Health Campus: Thursday 8/10/2020, 11-14 h
The Vélofixer will come to the Brussels Health Campus on 8 October to fix staff and student bicycles, you only pay the material costs. Send an e-mail with a clear description of the necessary repairs and photos where necessary to mobiliteitscoordinator@vub.be for an appointment.
Public transport
- Renovation of Etterbeek Station
More than 50% of the VUB'ers come by train. A renovation of Etterbeek station is therefore on the wish list of many VUB commuters. Here is also good news: the NMBS and the Brussels Government Architect supervise the project of a total renovation and VUB is a member of the supervisory committee. The assignment in the design competition was to design a contemporary multimodal, integrally accessible station with sufficient capacity for travellers. The immediate surroundings, such as the narrow footpath along the Generaal Jacqueslaan, are also included in the scope. The end of the works is planned for 2025.
- Public transport in corona times
Most VUB staff commute to the campuses by public transport. The VUB does not advise against the use of public transport, but always reminds to respect the golden rules. It is still calm, and every operator takes measures. Check it out at mivb.be, nmbs.be and delijn.be.
- Extra parking spaces near the Brussels Health Campus
The parking pressure on BHC campus remains high, we would like to remind you of these alternatives:
You can also park your car at the parking Green Energy Park in Zellik. This new car park for the VUB and UZ Brussel of 200 spaces is easily accessible from the ring road, followed by a green walk of 1.5 km along the Bosstraat to the campus. At the end of this year, this car park will also be expanded with charging infrastructure as part of the Smart Energy Lab. We are going to visit this unique VUB living lab by bike or on foot and we will get more information on the spot from the research team.
Sign up for a site visit on 24/9 via e-mail to mobiliteitscoördinator@vub.be, 12h departure on campus, until max 14h. In this way, you will also get to know the new parking!
In addition, the Brussels-Capital Region provides free Park & Bikes until at least 15 October. There are 1000 parking spaces available at Brussels Expo (Heysel). Access is possible with a downloadable voucher via this website. For the route to the campus you can make use of the following possibilities:
- Villo! to campus
- STIB/MIVB: bus 14 direction BrusselsNorth
- De Lijn: bus 820 Brussels Expo stop (located on Romeinse Steenweg) in the direction of UZ Brussel
