Vrije Universiteit Brussel has taken note of recent online statements made by Dr Harry Pettit.
The VUB stands firmly for freedom of expression, including when it concerns controversial views. However, statements that incite hatred or violence not only cross legal boundaries, but also contravene the norms and values upheld within the VUB’s academic community.
Dr Pettit’s recent remarks are furthermore at odds with the agreements made with him in the context of his proposed appointment.
On that basis, the VUB has decided not to proceed with the planned appointment of Dr Pettit. This decision was communicated to him during a meeting on Sunday 1 March.
The VUB remains committed to fostering an academic environment in which critical debate can take place, with due regard for scientific integrity, the rule of law and the safety of our community.
