On World Cancer Day, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is launching a new action platform where supporters can create or contribute to fundraising initiatives for a good cause. Through this platform, the university aims to raise funds for vital research and education projects in need of financial support.
Today, we shine a spotlight on the VUB Yamina Krossa Fund for breast cancer research. The fund has set an ambitious goal: raising €1.2 million to bring the pioneering cancer research of Prof. Dr. Ir. Damya Laoui from the lab to patients.
Small Donations, Big Impact
The platform, actieplatform.vub.be, provides a space where anyone can start a fundraising campaign or support an existing one—be it a waffle sale, concert, marathon, or another creative initiative. Every effort counts, as small and large donations together create a powerful impact.
Initiatives for Breast Cancer Research
One of the dedicated fundraisers is Ginette Barrie, who organises the annual "Beat Cancer with Music" concert in Hamme, with all proceeds going to the Yamina Krossa Fund. This year's concert takes place on 26 March.
A sporting initiative comes from Kid Van Thienen, who will run the WALLS Linkeroever Half Marathon in Antwerp on 21 September to support the cause.
These initiatives highlight the strength of collective action. Every contribution, no matter how big or small, plays a role in the fight against cancer. Fund founder Yamina Krossa underlines the importance of every act of support:
"That one student who donated €5, or the loyal donors who support us monthly—they all make a difference. Even those who can’t donate themselves but inspire others to do so are invaluable to our mission."
Start or Support an Action
If you’d like to support research at VUB, you can start your own fundraising initiative or choose from existing ones. The VUB funds and projects cover a broad range of causes—from cancer research to supporting vulnerable students.
There are also other ways to contribute, such as mentioning VUB in “in lieu of flowers” donations, birthday fundraisers, or other special occasions.
The platform is managed by the VUB Foundation, VUB’s official fundraising service.*
