In this series, we highlight how collaboration with partners strengthens research, enables new insights and creates societal impact. In this first story, we illustrate how SD Worx is committed to supporting the Advanced Master in Social Law at VUB.
When Vincent Eltgeroth, People Business Partner at SD Worx, reflects on the collaboration with Vrije Universiteit Brussel, he sees a partnership that goes far beyond traditional sponsorship. What began as a well-considered investment in knowledge sharing has evolved into a strategic collaboration with clear added value for both the university and the company.
“The VUB was a logical choice for us: the university is located in the beating heart of Belgium and delivers exactly the profiles we need as a company.”
A smart match: academic expertise and labour market relevance
In 2022, SD Worx joined the Advanced Master in Social Law at VUB, a programme that responds strongly to current societal challenges. The programme attracts students who are academically strong, often multilingual and highly socially engaged. “The students in this programme are truly committed. And they are often bilingual — a profile that is extremely valuable on the Belgian labour market today.”
During guest lectures, SD Worx dives deep into practice with the students. A complete payroll statement is analysed, from company cars and fringe benefits to taxation and salary components. “We examine an entire payroll statement from A to Z. This gives students a unique insight into what really matters in practice.”
Knowledge sharing and employer branding in one move
The collaboration extends beyond teaching. Each academic year, SD Worx also awards a prize for the best master’s thesis in the Advanced Master programme. The award ceremony takes place during the first expert lecture, including a personal congratulatory letter from CEO Koen Verdonck. “For us, this is a way to reward excellence, but at the same time it is a warm and authentic way to make SD Worx visible.”
During the guest lecture, SD Worx also provides welcome packages, brochures and branded materials in the classroom. The session is always followed by an informal networking reception where students and professionals can connect. “We attach great importance to personal contact. That reception is often where the real connection is made.”
A unique programme in Flanders
The Advanced Master in Social Law at VUB distinguishes itself through its unique entry profile: it is the only programme in Flanders where students without a prior law degree can build solid legal expertise.
“Within SD Worx, many people were surprised that such a programme exists. For us, it opens up opportunities: employees without a previous law background can continue to grow through this programme.”
Why Brussels is an asset
For SD Worx, VUB’s location played an important role. “Brussels is the capital of Belgium and Europe. Companies here need bilingual, legally trained professionals. VUB is positioned right in the middle of that ecosystem.”
Although SD Worx also collaborates with universities of applied sciences in Flanders, VUB offers additional added value: academic depth combined with a diverse and multilingual student population. “We did not yet have a partnership in Brussels. For us, this was a unique opportunity to strengthen our presence there.”
