The VUB is now collaborating with Owl Press, the academic and scientific publishing arm of Borgerhoff & Lamberigts, which will take over the publications of VUBPRESS. Good news for researchers and lecturers: they will benefit from increased support, a broader range of services, and additional advantages. With this partnership, both organizations aim to enhance the digital accessibility of academic research and scientific knowledge worldwide.
Owl Press is well known in higher education and the job market for its high-quality textbooks and academic publications by leading authors. By joining forces with VUBPRESS, researchers and lecturers will receive improved in-house guidance at every stage of the publication process — from editorial support and quality control to design and distribution.
Types of publications
VUBPRESS offers five types of publications:
- Textbook or course book: Teaching material developed by a lecturer to support a specific course.
- Academic publication: Aimed at a specialized academic audience.
- Popular science publication: Academic research translated for a broader, general audience.
- Promotional book: Commissioned by the VUB, often used as a corporate or institutional gift.
- PhD dissertation: Professionally published doctoral theses in VUB house style.

Since the 2024–2025 academic year, Owl Press (Borgerhoff & Lamberigts) and Academic & Scientific Publishers (imprints VUBPress, University Press Antwerp, and ASP Editions) have joined forces to elevate academic publishing to the next level.
This partnership focuses on a future-oriented approach, aiming to make academic research and scientific knowledge digitally accessible worldwide. Together, they offer an Open Access publishing program and a user-friendly web tool for PhD theses. They also ensure efficient book distribution and invest in digital and audiovisual content to further broaden the dissemination of academic knowledge.
AlLREADY PUBLISHED (in Dutch) – ‘Vrije Geesten’
At the start of the 2024–2025 academic year, VUB, in collaboration with Owl Press, launched the book Vrije Geesten as the first milestone of their renewed partnership. The work highlights the intellectual tradition and the critical, independent thinkers who have shaped VUB over the years.
AVAILABLE SOON (in Dutch) - ‘Braem - VUB: Tempel der Wetenschappen’
In June 2025, Braem – VUB: Temple of Sciences will be published, a richly illustrated book paying tribute to the visionary architect Renaat Braem. The book takes the reader through the history of the VUB’s creation, Braem’s struggle for his bold designs, and the symbolism and vulnerability of his modernist architecture. At the same time, it emphasizes the need to preserve this iconic building for the future.
