Vrije Universiteit Brussel offers 34 bachelor’s and 85 master’s programmes. Who better to explain what makes a programme so fascinating than the students themselves? This month, student Maud Januarius shares her enthusiasm for Biology in a 90-second video: “Over the years, you learn a great deal about other ecosystems and everything that goes on in nature.”

Maud used to associate Biology mainly with humans and how the body works. But during her degree, she discovered that biology encompasses so much more. Other ecosystems and the fascinating world of nature also feature prominently in the programme. And sometimes, this leads to surprising insights.

For example, Maud discovered that corals are not plants, but animals. This discovery deepened her fascination with nature and its ecosystems, inspiring her to dream of a future beneath the waves. To turn that dream into reality, Maud is taking diving lessons in the swimming pool at VUB. After completing her bachelor’s degree in Biology, she hopes to specialise further through the Master of Marine and Lacustrine Science and Management. She wants to deepen her knowledge of life in oceans and lakes.

Her big dream? To work in a warm country after graduating, surrounded by colourful coral reefs. There, she hopes to help restore and rebuild coral reefs, making her own contribution to the conservation of these remarkable ecosystems.
