But visibility alone is not enough. Women remain underrepresented in research, receive fewer opportunities, and too often face barriers throughout their academic careers.

Gender equality in research
VUB remains the Flemish university with the highest percentage of female professors. In 2024, nearly 36% of the Independent Academic Staff (ZAP) — the group of professors and academic researchers who conduct independent research and provide education — are women. This confirms the university’s leading role in promoting gender equality within the academic world. At the same time, this figure shows that despite progress, women are still not proportionally represented in the most influential positions in science.
Women making impact
The 20 women highlighted through this campaign work across a wide range of fields that are crucial to our society: from cancer research to history, from mobility to climate and digital innovation. The challenges they address are immense and the needs within the scientific community remain high. Access to appropriate facilities, research budgets, and long-term funding is often decisive for the success and impact of research.
