To support research into immunotherapy at UZ Brussel, the UZ Brussel Foundation organized the second edition of the “Paul De Knop Challenge” on May 30. This lighthearted and sporty teambuilding event brought together companies from various sectors to compete for the coveted prize: The Golden Knopke. A total of €60,448.12 was raised for the VUB-UZB Paul De Knop Fund.
With the Paul De Knop Challenge 2024, companies and their employees came together for an afternoon centered on health, solidarity, and clinical scientific research. Participants took on eight athletic challenges (such as the Inflatable Run and Cardio Challenge), which uniquely combined teambuilding with networking.
By participating in the challenge, companies supported the scientific research of UZ Brussel through the VUB-UZB Paul De Knop Fund. It offered sympathizers without a medical background an ideal opportunity to contribute to the fight against cancer.
Tribute to the late VUB rector Paul De Knop
Shortly after his rectorship, former VUB rector Paul De Knop was diagnosed with melanoma. Two years ago, he passed away from the consequences of the disease. During his illness, Paul De Knop underwent various treatments at UZ Brussel. He offered his treating physician, Prof. Dr. Neyns, his support in raising funds to continue research into immunotherapy, leading to the establishment of the VUB-UZB Paul De Knop Fund.

Prof. Dr. Marc Noppen, CEO of UZ Brussel: “To keep the memory of my good friend and colleague Paul De Knop alive, and to contribute to cancer research, the UZ Brussel Foundation organized the ‘Paul De Knop Challenge’ for the second time. Once again, it was a tribute to his fight against melanoma and helps us to continue seeking a treatment for this disease.”
