Generative AI is increasingly helping us write, analyse and think. In lecture halls and labs, but just as much in offices and beyond. So how should a university approach AI? Not by imposing a blanket ban, but neither by embracing it without question. Professor Vincent Ginis explains VUB’s approach to AI.
There is no single right way to use AI. What may be a valuable tool in one situation can be inappropriate or even prohibited in another. That is why, at VUB, we look not only at what AI can do, but above all at what we as humans choose to do with it.
This also changes how we think about learning and assessment. If AI can produce a convincing final result in seconds, what does that result still tell us about what someone can actually do themselves? The choices, intermediate steps and adjustments made along the way are becoming increasingly important.
