As a warm-hearted university, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) proudly throws its weight behind De Warmste Week 2025, which this year focuses on invisible illnesses. Among the 220 selected initiatives are a VUB project (“Intiem Verlicht”), a VUB Foundation project (“Positive Stories: Living with HIV in Images and Words”), and a project from UZ Brussel, the university hospital of VUB (“Powerful with Pain”). Each of these projects shares the same goal: to ensure that everyone – with or without illness – can take part fully and equally in society.

Some illnesses can’t be seen, yet they have a profound impact on people’s daily lives. Beyond the physical and mental pain, many face misunderstanding and a lack of support. De Warmste Week wants to change that — by sharing stories, breaking taboos, and supporting projects that improve life for those living with invisible conditions.

The three projects from VUB and UZ Brussel show how small gestures can make a huge difference for people living with invisible pain.

Intiem Verlicht

“Intiem Verlicht” offers a safe, bi-weekly meeting space for people with chronic pain and their partners, focusing on sexuality and relationships. Through talks with sexologists, peer conversations, podcasts, and a supportive app, the project breaks taboos, strengthens bonds, and gives voice to unspoken pain.
It fosters openness, understanding, and connection among those living with invisible pain.
