The VUB reports with great sadness the death of our emeritus professor Jan Clarys. Jan-Pieter Clarys was professor and head of Experimental Anatomy at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) from 1990 to 2013 and dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Kinesitherapy at the VUB from 1996 to 2004.
In 1995, he received the Dutch Prize for Sports Medicine, the Philip Noel Baker Research award (ICSSPE, UNESCO) and in 1996, he was made Doctor Honoris Causa of the John Moores University of Liverpool.
He was president of the World Commission of Sports Biomechanics, president of the International Society of Electrophysiology and Kinesiology, 1978 laureate of the Dutch Prize in Sports Medicine & Sports Medicine, 1996 laureate - silver medal for winter sports research of the Austrian Olympic Committee. .
Jan was diagnosed with lung cancer shortly after his retirement. The Vrije Universiteit Brussel is incredibly grateful to him for all his efforts, time and vision. Jan passed away from the effects of his lingering illness, aged 75. He leaves behind a wife, two children and one grandchild. The entire Vrije Universiteit Brussel and UZ Brussel community extends their condolences and wishes the family much courage during these difficult times.
Jan Clarys' farewell ceremony will take place on Saturday 11 February at 11am at Daelhof crematorium Zemst.
