Brussels, May 21st 2025 – The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), in collaboration with UZ Brussel and Hopital Universitaire de Bruxelles (H.U.B.) – Hopital Erasme / Institut Jules Bordet, have established Belgium’s first joint pancreatic cancer research group, the Brussels Pancreatic Cancer Team (BruPaCT). This unique initiative brings together expertise in fundamental, translational and clinical research to ensure systematic collaboration, the exchange of patient samples, and shared access to high-end infrastructure to advance pancreatic cancer research.
Pancreatic cancer remains one of the deadliest malignancies, with a five-year survival rate that has barely improved in decades. By formally integrating research efforts, BruPaCT will ultimately accelerate the development of new treatments and treatment strategies.
A strategic step for pancreatic cancer research in Belgium
The BruPaCT collaboration will cover key areas of research, including:
-
Tumor initiation and progression: understanding the biology of pancreatic cancer development
-
Tumor and tissue profiling: identifying molecular markers for targeted therapies, including the leveraging of artificial intelligence to personalize treatments
-
Innovative treatment strategies: testing new therapies and modern radiation therapy techniques in experimental models and clinical trials; such as the ongoing Belgian clinical trial STEREOPAC.
-
Surgical advancements: enhancing pancreatic cancer surgery techniques
-
An early detection program
By consolidating resources, BruPaCT will be better positioned to attract research funding and expand international collaborations, further strengthening Brussels' leading role in pancreatic cancer research.
