After graduation

Develop your understanding of cellular processes, biological molecules and their interactions and choose your preferred profile: Biotechnology for Global Health or Agro- and Plant Biotechnology. You’ll graduate knowing how to appraise the scientific and social aspects of applied molecular biology.

You’ll be armed to cope with a wide range of scientific problems and to develop preventive strategies, diagnostic techniques and therapies, while understanding relevant ethical issues.

By developing your critical thinking skills, you will be able to examine and reflect on existing and new theories in the field of study, helping you to solve global problems or issues that both developing and developed countries are facing. So, what are you waiting for?

What have you learnt?

Forget traditional and passive methods; we focus on practice! We focus on using problem-solving formats to generate observations and analyse experimental results. In our experience, this type of learning boosts problem-solving abilities, conceptual understanding and success in subsequent courses.

Curious as to what our researchers are up to?

The contrasting simplicity and complexity of the body's immune system inspired Aarushi Caro to delve into the field of immunology. Her doctoral research, conducted in collaboration between the VUB and KU Leuven, centers on unraveling the role of dendritic cells - the vigilant guardians of our immune system - in ovarian cancer. Her goal is to investigate the viability of utilizing dendritic cells as a vaccine against this life-threatening illness. In this video produced in partnership with Science Figured Out, she elaborates on her research on ovarian cancer.

What professions will it allow you to enter?

This master's degree opens many doors to an exciting future. It may be in a university, hospital, private or governmental research laboratory or patenting bureau, or in the R&D department of a pharmaceutical, food or biotech company. Work on environmental protection, develop state-of-the-art equipment in biotechnology, or join a sales and marketing department. Be a lecturer, consultant or advisor to policy makers. Or, why not stick around in the Brussels-Capital Region for some scientific research in your favourite highly specialised sector or advanced technologies? You could also continue your academic career as a PhD researcher in Belgium or abroad. Whatever you choose, molecular biology is a rapidly developing discipline in modern life science, and companies need ambitious and knowledgeable scientists.
