A game to awaken enthusiasm among girls in particular for mathematics and scientific studies

Since 2010 we have used the game Mathematical Mary ('Wiskunnend Wiske') to awaken enthusiasm among secondary school students - particularly girls - for mathematics and scientific studies. And there’s no time to waste, because Belgium needs more scientists and engineers. Every year, no fewer than 2,000 students from 150 classes participate. An overwhelming success. But setting up this competition requires a great deal of time and resources. By making a donation, you contribute to this first-rate educational project.

Will you help?

How is the game played?

Preliminary round

Mathematical Mary kicks off with a preliminary round in which a class of students collaborate to complete three assignments. So, the entire class can contribute based on everyone's unique talents.

Finale

After this selection round, 40 classes or about 450 young people remain.  They can come and put their heads together on our Etterbeek campus during the big finale on Pi Day in March (14 March - welk jaar?). This helps these potential students become better acquainted with the university.

Together - but without help from the teacher - each class solves four problems. Via a sort of treasure hunt game and under the guidance of student ambassadors, the young people explore various locations on the campus. At the end of the day, the top three are honoured and all the others receive a souvenir.
