Positive energy what?
A positive energy district is an inhabited neighbourhood, often newly built, that produces as much energy as it consumes on an annual basis. An efficient and sustainable energy plan is what we want everywhere. That is why Cosmopolis, the centre for urban research at the VUB, is now launching a project to introduce positive energy neighbourhoods in Belgium. First test case: Cureghem Abbatoir in Brussels!
But how does your neighbourhood become such a positive energy district? Since two years, Cosmopolis is building a network with other positive energy districts in the European Union. At the moment, VUB cooperates with Sweden and Austria and there are five neighbourhoods which regularly exchange ideas and advice. Each neighbourhood has something to teach the others in terms of efficiency, and so they encourage each other to get the best out of each neighbourhood. The ultimate goal is to determine the most efficient and sustainable energy plan for each neighbourhood.
