Science and scientists are increasingly under attack worldwide. Yet real science cannot exist without free research. And without scientists being able to freely share the results of their research.

Secretary-General of Amnesty International Agnès Callamard, co-founder of Scholars at Risk Robert Quinn, economist Mariana Mazzucato, top scientist in international law Martti Koskenniemi, mathematician Efim Zelmanov and physiologist Andrew Jones each contribute in their respective fields to free and open science and thus help build a better world for all: reason why they are awarded an honorary doctorate by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel.

During the award ceremony, Mariana Mazzucato, who received her honorary doctorate in London, will address the audience in a video message. Andrew Jones was already awarded his honorary doctorate at a ceremony on 20 April.

We sincerely hope to welcome you on Thursday 1 June at the VUB Main Campus for the presentation of the honorary doctorates. For practical reasons, however, registration in advance is required.
