The day will be split into two main parts: part one will focus on VUB’s Strategic International Partnerships (SIPs) that are currently in place, and part two will be the International Equitable Cooperation (IEC) Career Award ceremony.  The day will close with a reception for all attendees of all events in the day. 

Throughout, a photo exhibit by Marius Burgelman about ‘Hope and Music in South African Townships’ will be on display in U-Residence in the lobby area.

  • 09:30-10:00     Coffee
  • 10:00-12:00    Strategic International Partnership with University of Western Cape (SA) 
    • Strategic International Partnership with University of the Western Cape: Looking back and forward + Examples of projects 
    • Why international cooperation with the South, financing projects in a financially challenging context, and how to involve new actors
    • Speakers*: Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research of University of Western Cape, VUB Vice-rector Internationalisation Wim Vandenbussche, VUB Vice-rector Research, and VUB Vice-rector Innovation & Valorisation
  • 12:00-14:00     Lunch – networking walking lunch (with posters on Erasmus+ and IEC projects)
  • 14:00-16:00    Strategic International Partnership with UCLV (Cuba)
    • How do SIPs work in relation to joint research, joint mobility, joint PhDs + Examples of projects 
    • What do SIPs have to offer the VUB community? How is it an investment on both sides, and what is the multiplier effect for both partners, and all actors involved
    • Speakers: Luis Antonio Barranco Oliveira (UCLV rector); Gurán Castellón (UCLV professor); Ana Rocio Mena Blanco & Dionys González Hernández (both grantees of a SIP joint PhD scholarship)
  • 16:00-16:30    Coffee break
  • 16:30-17:30    IEC Career Award 
    • This award is given to VUB academics, who have made a contribution to International Equitable Cooperation at the university. People who have emphasised knowledge and skills transfer with countries in Latin-America, Africa and Asia; people who have been an inspiration to others and have nurtured partnerships. This year’s IEC Career Award will go to two VUB academics. 
  • 17:30–18:30    Networking reception for IEC Career Award & International Day
