The AI institute FARI, a joint initiative of VUB and ULB, has won the Brussels Best Smart Experience Award at the visit.brussels Awards 2026. The award recognises initiatives that use advanced technology to enable people to experience Brussels in an innovative and accessible way.

The prize was awarded for the CAVE (Computer Augmented Virtual Environment), an immersive 3D environment in which visitors can explore virtual objects and data. It was developed by FARI in collaboration with the Brussels-Capital Region. The CAVE is located at BeCentral in central Brussels. Large screens bring urban data and scientific visualisations to life. Researchers, policymakers and citizens can jointly test different scenarios and assess the potential consequences of particular decisions for the city. The simulation makes complex information visible and helps different user groups explore possible solutions to urban challenges together.

The applications are wide-ranging. The technology is used for digital twins of cities, urban development, accessibility and crisis preparedness. By making data more tangible, the CAVE supports researchers, public authorities, urban planners and other partners in exploring possible scenarios and making better-informed decisions.

According to FARI, the award recognises the researchers, technical teams and partners who have contributed to the development of the CAVE. The distinction also highlights the role that research infrastructure can play in understanding and addressing complex urban challenges.

FARI is an independent artificial intelligence institute led by the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Université libre de Bruxelles. It investigates how AI, data and robotics can be used for the public good.
