Flabby Frills, according to the Oxford Dictionary is not quite the same as what we understand in Dutch as “Vadsige Fratsen”, but as such translated by Google. More correct would be ‘political incorrect jokes’.
The kind of jokes you make as a young student, mocking the bourgeoisie, spilling beer and singing unchaste songs.
However, the alliteration also reminds us of our youth’s comic strips, such as Jeremy and Frankie, Jo and Co, Spike and Suzy… One will find many of those characters such as Professor Jeremias, above somewhat ‘flabbier’ as usual on the scenery. That’s what the good student life leads to…
To go short: it will be a memorable evening. Drinks are sold during the breaks: a bottle of well cooled Cava at €10 or a crate of beer at €25. Those who do not drink alcohol are welcome too of course, water and soft drinks are available.
The contest is in Dutch, only smaller parts of the songs in other languages are allowed, but that should not block you from going. The atmosphere, costumes etcetera, it’s all one big party.
Twelve student circles were selected out of seventeen candidates. All songs must go about Flabby Frills, but not necessarily from VUB context. My guess is that this year ULB students will be the laughingstock. Vice-rector Jan Danckaert and BSGgtgv praeses (chairman) Arnaud Moeykens will officially open the festivities at 7 pm. But the first free barrel will open at 6pm already, somewhere in the neighbourhood. Those coming from Jette catch a free bus shuttle service also at 6pm, and on the bus free beers are provided. All this to make sure that your throats are well prepared to sing along.
After the four first songs the first break will be accompanied by a gypsy brass band, called Borokov. The second break they will come again while you are queuing up at the toilets. After the last four groups a surprise act will be highly appreciated. Then the award ceremony will be another joke, but the prize-winners of last year and the new ones will bring a final and rather drunk version of their winning songs. By 1.30 am deejay Luigi will close the final curtain.
