Every organisation is confronted with this issue sooner or later. Unwanted interactions can always happen in places where people congregate. Even on a university campus. We, as a university committed to the wellbeing of students and staff, don’t want to look the other way. So, what exactly is ‘unwanted inappropriate behaviour’?
Determining whether certain verbal or physical actions are unwanted and inappropriate is something that is subjective and personal. Often, there will be a social or cultural component that comes into play. Common examples of inappropriate behaviour include: bullying, unwanted sexual contact, sexual or racial insinuations or violence. Other examples include: intimidation, stalking, discrimination and harassment.
Reporting is important
The VUB is calling on its entire community to report such behaviour. This can be the first step in a process. However, anyone wishing to file a report and leave it at that is free to do so too. Mapping the issue also contributes to future prevention.
Inappropriate behaviour can be reported at ReportIt@vub.ac.be . The hotline can be contacted by everybody on the VUB campuses: students, staff and visitors. A professional and confidential approach is guaranteed.
