Max Schrems is worldwide known for being the initiator behind the Europe v Facebook (IVF) group that filed a privacy complaint against Facebook. The complaint ended up being treated by the Court of Justice of the European Union. On 6 October 2015, the Court ruled that the Safe Harbour framework, a EU-US agreement allowing US companies to repatriate European data, was invalid.
 
Privacy Camp is a so-called civil soiety warm–up for the Computers, Privacy & Data Protecion Conference (CPDP) of 2016. CDPD was founded in 2007 by research groups from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Université de Namur and Tilburg University. It has since grown into a platform carried by 20 academic centers of excellence from the EU, the US and beyond.
 
The last conference of the annual event welcomed almost 1000 participants from all over the world, including more than 400 speakers. Its artistic and public side events such as the Pecha Kucha and an art exhibition, attracted an additional 500 people.
