Marc's research interests are in the applications of participatory geographic information systems (PGIS) in natural resource management, rural development, and health issues. In 2006 he was awarded the Development Cooperation Prize by the Belgian Minister for development cooperation for his master's thesis on the role accessibility to basic services has on poverty incidence in a tropical mountain area of the Philippines. For his PhD research he was awarded the Foreign Scholar Travel Award in 2012 by the US Regional Chapter of the International Association for Landscape Ecology. He is currently a visiting Professor in the Faculty of Engineering at the National University of Asuncion, Paraguay where he is focussing his research and teaching on the use of geospatial tools for visualising and analysing geographical data, mainly through the active participation of local users.
