Today marks the start of the graduation ceremonies for Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB), held on the iconic Grand Place in Brussels—a location that symbolises the deep connection between the university, its students, and the city itself. Over 2,200 master’s students are being honoured in the presence of their families and friends. From the balcony of Brussels City Hall, graduates are celebrated for their dedication and academic achievements—the crowning moment of their university journey. Following the ceremony, the festivities continue at the Mont des Arts.

For three days, the Grand Place becomes the beating heart of VUB’s graduation celebrations. One by one, the university’s eight faculties, the Multidisciplinary Institute for Teacher Education, the Brussels School of Governance (BSoG), and BRUFACE bid farewell to their students with enthusiastic applause.

Each ceremony features speeches from prominent figures, including the rector or vice-rector, faculty deans, VUB alumni, and Anaïs Maes, Brussels’ alderwoman for Dutch-language education. Their messages encourage graduates to remain committed to building a better world by pursuing socially meaningful careers. The ceremonies also include the announcement of laureates and the presentation of various awards.

After the official proceedings, the Class of 2025 is invited to Plein Publiek BXL, a unique venue on the Mont des Arts, where they raise a glass with their guests to celebrate the successful completion of their academic journey.

“The graduation week is an emotional moment that firmly positions Brussels as a hub of knowledge,” said Philippe Close, Mayor of the City of Brussels. “A Smart City is not only about technology—it’s also about creativity and innovation. Welcoming thousands of students to one of Europe’s most beautiful squares is a way of celebrating their knowledge and making Brussels a true breeding ground for talent.”

For Anaïs Maes, alderwoman for Dutch-language education, “Starting at VUB marks the beginning of a new chapter in students’ lives. They also become ambassadors of Brussels. They’ve gained knowledge, embraced the city’s diversity and values, and grown into critical global citizens ready to make a difference.”

“Graduating from VUB is done in style, on the most beautiful square in Europe,” said VUB Rector Jan Danckaert. “It’s a grand celebration, but it also comes with a mission: to use the knowledge our graduates have acquired over the years to help build a better world.”

Following VUB’s ceremonies, graduation events will continue for students from the Université libre de Bruxelles, the Haute École Francisco Ferrer, and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. In total, the festivities hosted by the four institutions will span three days, from Monday 6 to Wednesday 8 October.
