The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) has reaffirmed its commitment to building an inclusive and supportive academic community — one where every student is recognised and valued. According to its Facts & Figures 2024 report, the university actively supports more than 4,800 students through flexible study pathways, individualised guidance, and tailored facilities

Flexible programmes for diverse needs

The VUB was one of the first universities in Belgium to welcome working students. Today, 21.6% of students (4,840 students) combine their studies with a job. For them and other students with special needs — such as young carers, student entrepreneurs or students with disabilities — the university offers the ReFlex status.

983 students made use of ReFlex. The largest groups are students with a learning disability (423), a chronic illness, mental health issues or a physical disability. Most ReFlex students are enrolled in the faculties of Social Sciences, Psychology and Medicine.

Caring campus culture

The VUB is also committed to mental well-being and connectedness. As a Compassionate University, it organises annual commemorative events and provides space for reflection and care. Through the COCO (Compassionate Communities Centre of Expertise) research centre, interdisciplinary research is conducted into caring communities in Flanders and Europe.

Satisfaction and participation

The general satisfaction survey shows that 77% of students are satisfied with their experience at the VUB. Students actively participate in policy: 20% vote in student elections, and 10% of the members of governing bodies are students.

Compassionate university facts & figures

The VUB wants to not only educate students academically, but also support them in their personal development. This requires an environment in which everyone feels seen and appreciated.

A total of 1,715 students received a VUB scholarship, amounting to €1,393,814. This support is intended for students who experience financial barriers during their studies. In addition, 18.9% of students are eligible for scholarships, which amounts to 4,426 students.
