Bony Islam Khan met een trui van de VUB

It is with much sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Bony Islam Khan, a master's student in Linguistics at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He passed away on 13 October 2024.

In 2018, Bony graduated from North South University in Bangladesh and later came to VUB to pursue a master's degree in Linguistics. He was a warm and engaged individual.

Beyond his academic interests, Bony was a passionate football fan and an active member of the Manchester City OSC Bangladesh. His friends there remember him as a kind-hearted, always cheerful person who regularly took part in supporters' club events.

As vice-programme director of the Multilingual Master in Linguistics and Literary Studies (MUMA), I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to Bony's family and friends for the terrible and far too early loss. The MUMA community will fondly remember Bony for the joy, warmth and dedication he radiated. My deepest condolences to Bony's family and friends during this time of deep sorrow in this "season of mists". The photo of Bony reminded me of the last ode that the English Romantic poet John Keats wrote, the last major work that he completed before he too passed away at a far too young age, also in a foreign land. It is entitled "To Autumn" and I would like to share it with you as a tribute to Bony. We will think of you each time

To Autumn (by John Keats)

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,
Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;
Conspiring with him how to load and bless
With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run;
To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,
And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;
To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells
With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,
And still more, later flowers for the bees,
Until they think warm days will never cease,
For summer has o’er-brimm’d their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?
Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find
Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,
Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;
Or on a half-reap’d furrow sound asleep,
Drowsed with the fume of poppies, while thy hook
Spares the next swath and all its twined flowers:
And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep
Steady thy laden head across a brook;
Or by a cider-press, with patient look,
Thou watchest the last oozings, hours by hours.

Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?
Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,—
While barred clouds bloom the soft-dying day,
And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;
Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The redbreast whistles from a garden-croft,
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

As Dean of the faculty of Languages & Humanities, as lecturer in the MuMA and MuBA programs, and as a father of two children, I felt extremely sad when I heard of Bony’s unexpected and untimely passing. My thoughts and heart go out to Bony’s parents, family, friends and fellow students. I wish them all the strength and courage it takes to see them through these painful, difficult times. And I hope that, once time has done its healing work, his family and friends will be able to remember Bony with a smile and keep him alive in their thoughts and memories.

None of us could have imagined we’d be writing these messages after your passing, Bony. Your family and friends in Bangladesh and Belgium have loved you and will always love you.
