After graduation

This master's degree opens all kinds of doors in many different branches and sectors. The private sector? (Non-) governmental organisations? Or perhaps you’ll continue your academic career as a PhD researcher? Not sure what your next step should be? We’d be happy to help you.

What have you learnt?

Our aim is to train designers to harvest the synergy between two disciplines: engineering and architecture. You'll gain an advanced level of knowledge and insight in both architectural and engineering sciences, encouraging you to address the challenges of the built environment and the modern building industry in a complex, sustainable architectural design, helping to shape the world around us. Our programme is based on cutting-edge, scientific research, so you are optimally prepared for a wide range of careers. All of this is combined with management training, aimed at thoroughly training you to lead architectural projects, while at the same time stimulating an attitude of lifelong learning.

Further study

Although the degree gives you ample job opportunities, we also stimulate an attitude of lifelong learning. You can choose to deepen your knowledge in specific courses offered by professional organisations with a clear link to the work field, an additional academic master's programme or an executive master's programme, for those who want to combine their job with an extensive training programme. And if you are really into scientific research, you can also apply to do a PhD at our department.

What professions will it allow you to enter?

Job opportunities

You'll be prepared for a wide range of job profiles such as:

  • Architect and structural engineer
  • Project manager
  • Consultant
  • Employee or executive in an architectural or engineering office
  • Supervisor of the built heritage
  • Policy maker for urban planning
  • Researcher

Our alumni tell to what jobs this diploma leads...

  • James Richardson | Structural engineer

"After my studies, I completed a PhD at VUB and ULB and also spent time at Princeton University. Then I started working as a structural engineer in New York. My working days mainly consist of a mix of engineering and management. Being part of a relatively small and young office in New York is a unique experience because the growth potential is enormous and we get the chance to build unique structures."

  • Milena Vleminckx-Huybens | Urban planner

"I work for a city administration, in a team of urban planners. Together we create master plans and zoning plans, and come up with strategies on how to deal with vacancy and unoccupied buildings in the city. Improving the life quality of the citizens is both the starting point and the final objective. It's really rewarding to see the impact of my work in real life."

  • Pieterjan Franck | Restoration architect

"I have been working for ten years at an architectural firm specializing in the restoration of architectural heritage. Restoration is a very special form of architecture. As a restoration architect, you strive to make the projects you work on shine. And it may seem that you walk in the shadow of your work, but nothing could be further from the truth. After all, it's a great honour to be able to contribute to heritage, both today and tomorrow."
