What is an academic bachelor’s degree?

You can do an academic bachelor’s degree at a university. The emphasis is on theory and research. After three years of full-time study, you can obtain a bachelor’s degree. Afterwards, you can continue with a master’s programme.

At the VUB, only academic bachelor’s programmes are offered.

What is the difference with a professional bachelor’s degree?

You can do a professional bachelor’s degree at a university of applied sciences. Such programmes focus strongly on practical training and the skills you need to start working immediately. After completing a professional bachelor’s degree, you can obtain an additional bachelor’s degree through a bachelor-after-bachelor programme (often referred to as a banaba) to further develop your skills, or take a bridging programme that allows you to continue towards a master’s degree.

Who can enrol in an academic bachelor’s programme?

Anyone with a degree from Flemish secondary education or a higher education degree can start an academic bachelor’s programme. More information about the conditions and possible exceptions can be found on the website of the Flemish government.

For some programmes, you must first take a diagnostic or compulsory entry test. The result does not determine whether you are allowed to start, but it does give you a clear picture of your current level. The test is therefore not a mere formality, but a reality check of your chances of success.

For the Bachelor of Medicine, you must pass the Medicine Entrance Exam (only in Dutch).

In which languages can you study?

At VUB, you can do bachelor’s programmes in both Dutch and English, so you can choose what suits you best. In the heart of Brussels, you will study in an international and multilingual environment, the ideal place to think beyond borders.
