Following last year's success, where 120 trees found a home on the campus thanks to enthusiastic volunteers, the Brussels initiative 'Bûûmplanters' returns. This year, 485 trees and shrubs are set to be planted along Nieuwelaan, under expert guidance. Your contribution is immensely valuable and highly appreciated: you are welcome!

Planting trees on the VUB campus offers numerous benefits:

  • Aesthetic and Climatic Improvements: Adding more greenery, shrubs, and trees not only makes the campus more visually appealing, but it also contributes to a healthier and cooler climate. This is beneficial for students, staff, and local residents.
  • Sustainability Focus: We are selecting native, climate-resilient plant species. These contribute to strengthening urban biodiversity.
  • Ecological Benefits: Plants such as Guelder rose, blackthorn, and hawthorn bloom and bear berries in different seasons, providing a valuable food source for insects and birds.
  • Culinary Value: For humans, the berries of the blackthorn offer an additional advantage. After steeping in gin or jenever for a year, they form the basis for a flavorful liqueur known as 'sloe gin,' enhancing the connection between nature and culture on campus.

Extra: Free winter pruning course for fruit trees on March 6

This year we continue our green efforts with a professional winter pruning course at the VUB Main Campus, organized in cooperation with Bûûmplanters. This professional course offers you a unique chance to gain direct practical skills in pruning and caring for trees and plants.

The day starts with a theory lesson on March 6, from 10:00 to 12:00, followed by hands-on experience in the orchard from 13:00 to approximately 15:00 or 16:00. Under the expert guidance of Eddy Vets, this promises to be a valuable and educational experience.

Sign up by emailing thomas.matei@buumplanters.be and receive all the necessary information about this course.
