What?

On the 23rd and the 24th of March 2023, Professor Serge da Motta Veiga will visit VUB. He was nominated by the faculty of Social Sciences and Solvay Business School to take on the VUB-chair during the academic year 2023-2024. During his visit, he will present his recent research results about age discrimination in the workplace. Participants are invited to discuss this topic together.

Age discrimination in the workplace, what exactly does it entail? Only a few can explain this better than the expert himself. In the following paragraph, he briefly explains his research through his abstract:

In this work, we highlight the importance of understanding age discrimination at work from the targets’ (i.e., the person who is perceiving being discriminated) perspective. We underscore the crucial role of age in shaping the development of perceived age discrimination over time. Our findings also highlight that the belief in a just world plays a functional and adaptive role in constantly protecting employees from the perceptions of age discrimination at work. Finally, we unveil that while the majority of workers do not report the perception of age discrimination at work over time, resulting in better long-term work outcomes compared to those in both increasing and decreasing change patterns, they also go against the intuition that an improving (i.e., decreasing) pattern may be better in the long-term than a worsening (i.e., increasing) pattern, as we found no difference in work outcomes between the increasing and decreasing age discrimination patterns.”
