VUB calls on community to further support Amnesty International’s #SaveAhmadreza campaign
Today came the news that the execution of VUB guest lecturer Ahmadreza Djalali has been postponed. He was not transferred yesterday to Raja’i Shahr prison in Karaj to be executed as threatened. The office responsible for carrying out the sentence announced that an “order came from higher up” to postpone the execution “for a few days”.
“This is a great relief and gives hope. Our joint actions are clearly having an effect, but the danger remains. At the same time, it is a sign to maintain and perhaps increase our commitment. We must persevere,” says rector Caroline Pauwels.
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel therefore calls on its community to continue to support Amnesty International’s #SaveAhmadreza campaign en masse and to share it in their networks. VUB also continues to hope that a solution can be found by political and diplomatic means and that Dr Djalali can be released.
