On 16 November, OceanConnectXL, a VUB initiative funded through the FWO’s ICA programme, will bring together alumni from marine and freshwater programmes across generations at VUB aan Zee in Ostend. Throughout the day, the focus will be on networking, knowledge exchange, career development and new collaborations in ocean research and management. Registration for the event is now open.
The United Nations has designated the current decade as the Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021–2030), with ambitious goals for healthy oceans, sustainable ecosystems and a better understanding of the role of the ocean in the climate system. In this context, collaboration and knowledge sharing are more important than ever.
With more than 40 years of experience in marine and freshwater education, Flanders has built a strong international community of researchers and professionals. On 16 November, the OceanConnectXL Alumni Event will bring this community together at VUB aan Zee in Ostend.

A programme for exchange and inspiration
The programme will feature keynote talks, interactive sessions and networking opportunities around topics such as career development, research collaboration, partnerships and project development. Exchange between different generations of ocean professionals will also be a central part of the event.
The programme is currently being developed further. Detailed timings, speakers and session formats will be announced at a later date.

Who is the event for?
The event is primarily aimed at alumni of marine and freshwater master’s programmes in Flanders (Oceans & Lakes, IMBRSea, TROPIMUNDO and earlier programmes). Alumni of other master’s programmes with a strong connection to marine or freshwater science, such as an MSc Biology of Human Ecology), are also welcome.
Participation in the event is free of charge, but registration is required.
