Rest in peace, Joachim.

It is with immense sadness that the VUB community says goodbye to Dr. Joachim Frans. Joachim died unexpectedly on 7 December 2023 in a traffic accident while cycling to work. He leaves behind his wife Magaly and his two children, Maya and Noud. We are deeply touched by the sudden death of Joachim, who had an inspiring approach to life. We cherish all the wonderful memories and sympathize with his family, friends and acquaintances.

Dr. Joachim Frans was a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Logic and Philosophy of Science at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He studied Philosophy and Moral Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and completed a postgraduate degree in Logic, History and Philosophy of Science at Ghent University. In 2017 he obtained his PhD in Philosophy and Moral Sciences at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel on explanatory proofs in mathematics. His postdoctoral research was a continuation of this. He recently published an accessible book about mathematical practice together with colleagues Bart Van Kerkhove and Jean Paul Van Bendegem.

Joachim loved scientific collaboration and he published with colleagues from Brussels, Ghent and other countries. He was passionate about education and taught and assisted several courses including 'Logica en Wetenschapsfilosofie', ‘Logic exercises’, 'Philosophy of Mathematics and Natural Sciences', and 'Taal en betekenis'.

With Joachim's passing we lose a very amiable, helpful and affable colleague and, for many of you, a dear friend. Joachim had been a much-loved person within the Center for Logic and Philosophy of Science for years and his loss is unreal. Thanks to his secret coffee stash, he could offer anyone a delicious cup of comfort at any given time. He took his research and teaching very seriously, but he never forgot his other priorities: his family, friends and free time―from pottery making to winter swimming. The way he approached life was admirable and inspiring. We will miss Joachim enormously.

This is crushing. Joachim was such a good guy, and so indispensable to the community in philosophy of math that we're both part of. We'll all be less without him.

Joachim and I finished our PhDs in the same year on the same topic, and his work has always been a major touchstone for me. I was lucky to have been chosen to referee his most recently published piece ("Mathematical Explanation: Epistemic Aims and Diverging Assessments"). Not only was it philosophically excellent, it gave me the rare pleasure of feeling I'd linked minds with a kindred spirit. I think Joachim's cognitivism and contextualism about explanation are exactly on the right track. The approach to these issues I've developed in my own work owes a lot to him. It'll be a privilege to carry the work forward in his memory.

I met Joachim as I was preparing to apply for VUB to study—he made me feel welcome, and was intellectually encouraging and extremely helpful and patient with my questions. I only wish I could have gotten to know him better.

My feelings go out to his family, wife and children, to whom I wish a long life.

I met Joachim when he arrived at the CLPS to start his PhD one year after me. Joachim was the ideal colleague and friend. He had a strong positive energy and take on life that was very inspiring and comforting. Over the years, we organized many academic events together. This has always been very enjoyable and a lot of fun. I am very grateful to have had Joachim as a colleague and friend during all those years.

My deepest thoughts go to his wife, children, family, and friends.

Dear Joachim,

When I came to Brussels and started sharing an office with you and Sven in 2016, I entered one of the kindest places on earth. You were a careful listener. You helped me when things got lost in translation. You made me a massive amount of good coffee. You could speak so joyously about research and life.

My heart breaks for your family and friends. I will continue to be inspired by your approach to life.

Joachim was a natural-born collaborator. It speaks to the qualities we remember in him that so much of his work was jointly authored.
My deepest sympathies to his family, friends and colleagues.

I knew Joachim from research exchanges with Ghent and VUB, and I'm really shocked to hear this news. I really enjoyed seminars with him and thought him a really interesting researcher and teacher. My heart goes out to his family and close friends. I am so very sorry.

I learned about our loss of Joachim by chance and felt a deep pain inside me.

We met him at the 2023 Masterclass, maybe we didn't even talk. However, he organized the process very well with his sincere smile and sincerity.

I offer my condolences to his family and relatives.

Lieve Magaly,

I remember when I joined the CLPS back in 2018, Joachim was one of the core campus 'regulars', leading us to lunch, for coffee breaks and so on. Although he was very welcoming to me when I arrived, I could feel that there might have been some mutual wariness about our potentially conflicting philosophical outlooks. This impression disappeared almost immediately however, when I saw that Joachim was not easily drawn into sterile debates, instead preferring to keep a more thoughtful distance from our sometimes heated lunch time discussions.
At the same time, we found ourselves, together with fellow cyclist Jip, being equally keen to study the latest road cycling results as we were to rehash the analytic vs continental division in philosophy.
Joachim's easy going attitude meant I was often drawn to chatting with him on social occasions. In particular, my partner and I spent a lovely evening sitting together with Joachim and Magaly at our colleague Pieter's wedding party.
He will be sorely missed.
