On Thursday 16 October 2025 starting at 6 p.m., a new edition of TEDxVUB, the independent TED event that brings together thinkers, doers and dreamers every year, will take place on the campus of Vrije Universiteit Brussel in Ixelles. Under the theme “Never Say Never”, speakers will challenge the audience to rethink the impossible – and embrace the unthinkable. Students receive a 50% discount.

From climate science to personal transformation, from decolonisation to aerodynamics: TEDxVUB 2025 provides a platform for voices that each challenge the status quo in their own way. The evening promises a mix of sharp insights, personal stories and creative performances.
‘We live in a time when “never” is increasingly becoming “now”,’ says the organising team. ‘TEDxVUB wants to seize that momentum and inspire people to push their own boundaries.’

More than just talkers
TEDxVUB is more than just an evening of lectures. The Etterbeek campus will be transformed into a creative hub with interactive installations, networking opportunities, and surprising performances. The event is part of the broader public programme of VUB, which, as an Urban Engaged University, is committed to dialogue, knowledge sharing and social impact.

TEDxVUB presents a remarkable line-up of speakers: from dynamic young leaders breaking down barriers in the public sector to visionary innovators shaping the future of technology.

Why students should not wait for permission to change the world
Oskar Bonte is a law student at VUB and a passionate climate activist. Through his advocacy and initiatives, he encourages students to challenge norms, take action and lead the way in tackling urgent environmental issues.

Pain is learned. And can be unlearned.
Emma Rheel is a postdoctoral researcher at VUB, where she conducts research on pain in children. Her research focuses on the causes of chronic pain in children and how distraction, education and parental support can influence their pain experiences and resilience.

Women in STEM: diversity as the key to science
Lesley De Cruz is a professor at VUB. She is very active in various fields that focus on making science more inclusive. This year, she is a WATS ambassador, promoting women in STEM and bringing forward voices that are often left out of the discussion.

Accelerating scientific discoveries with AI
Andres Algaba is Gen AI coordinator at VUB. He analyses how large language models (LLMs) can go beyond mere assistance and actively make scientific discoveries. His work connects algorithmic creativity with human insight. He investigates how AI can play a role in experimental design, analysis and hypothesis generation.

If the route changes and we find ourselves on unplanned roads
Amin Khorari studied Commercial Engineering at VUB and has now started a new life in a new city, a life far removed from the path he once envisioned. His journey—delays in his studies, job rejections, detours in his itinerary, and unexpected opportunities—taught him that progress is not always linear and that resilience often comes from unplanned detours.

The world needs you

This initiative is part of VUB's public programme, a programme for everyone who believes that scientific knowledge sharing, critical thinking and dialogue are an important first step to create impact in the world.
