Vrije Universiteit Brussel officially opened PRISM (Psychology, Research and Innovations for Mental Health) on 26 March 2026. The initiative is an interdisciplinary network focused on mental wellbeing. Professor Imke Baetens is both its founder and leading academic driving force.
The official launch took place on Thursday 26 March at the university’s campus in Etterbeek. During a guided tour, accompanied by drinks and light refreshments, visitors were introduced to the work of PRISM and BRUCC, and had the opportunity to explore ongoing projects.
Through PRISM, Vrije Universiteit Brussel and the Brussels University Consultation Center (BRUCC) are bringing together expertise to better address the growing mental health challenges faced by young people, families and professionals. PRISM focuses on prevention, early detection, support, professional training and digital innovations aimed at making care more accessible.
The network collaborates with schools, youth organisations, care providers and other partners. It translates scientific insights into practical tools and programmes that enable organisations to provide the right support more quickly.
Imke Baetens plays a central role within PRISM. She shapes its scientific vision and ensures a strong link between research and practice. Drawing on her extensive experience in evidence-based interventions, and her focus on the broader context of mental health—from family and school environments to primary care—she is helping to develop PRISM into a network where prevention and accessibility are key. Her involvement ensures that innovations within PRISM are not only academically grounded, but also aligned with the realities faced by young people, care professionals and policymakers.
PRISM works closely with BRUCC, the VUB’s outpatient psychological centre. Everything developed within PRISM is translated directly into practice through BRUCC, including individual counselling, group interventions and psychodiagnostic services for people with mild to moderate complaints, including VUB students and staff.
This connection is significant. In recent years, Vrije Universiteit Brussel has seen a sharp and growing demand for psychological support. Thanks to the structural partnership with BRUCC, students and staff can be referred more quickly and effectively to appropriate care.
