1. VUB scientists sound the alarm bells, but little or nothing changes
Climate scientists, including those from the VUB, share sufficient scientific evidence that it is 1 minute to midnight. The academic world has been proving for years that, unless we drastically change the way we live, the world will become uninhabitable, and yet little or nothing changes.
2. VUB research offers solutions, but resoluteness is lacking
A transition in the energy-, industry- and transport sectors is imminent. Scientists contribute both solutions and their implementations, but the policy doesn’t do enough to realize the transition. A transition to a low-carbon society does not have to lead to a reduction in comfort or prosperity. To the contrary: it will improve both air quality and quality of life. But it must happen NOW.
3. VUB sensitizes through the transfer of knowledge
As a university, we embed sustainability and care for the climate into our operations. We have an important role to play in transferring knowledge in this area. That is why we integrate sustainability in our lectures, organize boot camps about sustainability and host a 24-hour marathon on climate for students.
4. VUB is a pioneer in taking action
The VUB believes that everyone has a responsibility and that everyone can do something. We do this, amongst others, by investing in climate-friendly projects, introducing a plan to reduce air flights, offering vegetarian and vegan meals in our restaurant and organising various campaigns on campus.
5. VUB wants politicians to pursue a vigorous climate policy
The Flemish, Federal and European policies remain deaf to the numerous signals and efforts from academia, civil society and citizens. There is an urgent need for a united framework and more climate regulations. Plans must now be brought to fruition.
