Language courses 

Raising your English to an academic level or learning a new language? At ACTO, you get high-quality language training.

Useful to know: all ACTO language courses are open to VUB students and staff members. Most of the courses in the open range are also open to all other interested persons. We do not offer Dutch, French, German nor Spanish courses. Interested participants can instead turn to CVO Semper, also located on the VUB campus.

English language courses

Language tests

A study programme in another language, a new job... in many situations, you need to be able to provide official proof of your language level. Do you need an officially recognised language certificate?



ACTO can help you with your English, Dutch and French language tests. Check the different tests we offer and book a test via their respective websites or on our campus.

Language support for VUB students

Academic Dutch for students

Can you use some linguistic help with your papers, lectures or exams? Do you have trouble finding the right tone or style? Then register for a workshop or group course on academic Dutch on one of our platforms or make a private appointment.

Find a Tandem buddy

Learning a language by using it? That is exactly what you do in the Tandem project. You meet up with your tandem partner and have a drink in a bar or on campus, visit an exhibition or take a walk through Brussels. Either way, you both speak your mother tongue in the meantime. Bachelor, master or doctoral student: everyone is welcome!

Keep Writing Thursdays

Finding it hard to meet the deadline for your bachelor or master thesis? Follow one of our Keep Writing Thursdays. You then write your paper independently from your own location, but via Teams you also have a language coach, study supervisor or librarian at hand. You can ask questions or you can help motivate other students yourself.

Language support for VUB staff

Academic Dutch for academics

The VUB Academic Dutch team support you in drawing up rubrics for academic writing, teaching materials for a certain writing assignment and clear instructions of writing assignments. The language coaches can also visit on request for guest lectures on Academic Dutch; the teaching materials will always be adapted to the target group.

Bespoke language workshops

‘English for staff members’, ‘English for the Study Guidance Centre’, or something completely different? ACTO develops and runs language workshops tailored to the specific language requests and requirements of your department.
