Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen & St V
Pierre-Théodore Verhaegen is the founder of our university. We commemorate him every year with a student procession in the centre of Brussel, among other things.
This French mathematician and philosopher formulated a sentence that every right-minded VUB student carries in his heart. It starts with "Thinking should never submit...". Of course.
Scientia Vincere Tenebras
A Latin motto about the power of knowledge and science, which bring light into the darkness. Stated in the seal of the VUB.
The Song of No Language
It is sung at the end of every academic opening and also during the 'Vrijzinnig Zangfeest' (Liberal Singing Festival): the song of the rebellious students.
The Thinker In All States
No, it has not lost its direction, the rotating statue that stands prominently on our Main Campus in Etterbeek. It simply symbolises the need to constantly question everything.
