Your study programme

Our bachelor's programme

IMPORTANT: Make sure you opt for the correct programme code - 00722 - when you apply, because a similar programme with the same title exists for the Dutch-taught programme (which requires a high knowledge of and proficiency in Dutch if you wish to enrol).

At the start of your bachelor's programme, you'll choose two major languages from the six languages we offer (seven including our optional module Chinese you can choose from the third year onwards): Dutch, French, English, German, Spanish and Italian. These two languages will form the basis of your study programme, which consists of 60 ECTS on a yearly basis. All courses are taught in the target language, and students need to meet the following language requirements:

  • For German, Italian and Spanish courses start from scratch and no previous knowledge is needed - but the courses are fast paced and switch to the target language quite quickly.
  • For those wishing to study Dutch, a C1 proficiency level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages is required.
  • Students interested in studying English and French need a minimum proficiency level of B2.

In the first year, you will practice your language proficiency and learn the basics of linguistic and literary analysis. In year two, you continue to perfect your language proficiency and the insights acquired in the first year, you hone your skills in critical thinking and develop your capacity to analyse, discuss and present linguistic and literary research. During the final year, the first semester is marked by internationalisation. You can either study abroad in the framework of Erasmus+ or opt for internationalisation@home, an international exchange programme developed at VUB in collaboration with our EUTOPIA-partners. You can also decide to expand your language skills by adding a third or fourth language to your programme, or choose the educational module.

The bachelor in Linguistics and Literary Studies is a new study programme that was launched for the first time in the academic year of 2022-2023. The programme will grow in the following years, but keep in mind that only courses from the first bachelor year will be available in 2022-2023.
