CSC-VUB Scholarship Programme

GOING TOGETHER FOR EXCELLENCE

The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) has a firm tradition of collaboration with Chinese top universities in many disciplines. VUB and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) therefore jointly offer doctoral and postdoctoral scholarships to Chinese researchers to VUB. In 2005, VUB was the first university who signed an agreement with CSC among all Belgian universities. Based on the positive feedback from students and promoters, VUB and CSC renewed the cooperation agreement in 2013 for offering more opportunities to PhD, jointly-supervised PhD (including double PhD degree), Post-doctoral fellows, as well as visiting scholars.

Based on the agreement between VUB and CSC, these scholarships include a monthly allowance for the allocated period & international flight offered by CSC, and tuition fee waiver & health insurance offered by VUB (Note: the insurance is only provided for full PhD or jointly-supervised PhD students).

Note: The online application for the academic year 2022-2023 is open now!

China Scholarship Council (CSC)

China Scholarship Council

The China Scholarship Council is a division of the Chinese Ministry of Education which provides financial assistance to Chinese citizens who wish to study abroad, and to the foreign citizens who wish to study in China in order to develop the educational, scientific, technological, and cultural exchanges, as well as economic and trade cooperation between China and other countries. The CSC aims to strengthen friendship and enhance understanding between China and other countries. Please find more information on the official CSC website (only available in Chinese).

Type of PhD scholarships:

 - Full PhD candidates (3 to 4 years for a PhD degree at VUB)

 - Jointly supervised PhD - only for PhD students currently enrolled in a Chinese university (6 to 24 months for exchange or double-degree based on a mutual agreement for each student)

*Note: The VUB-CSC scholarship programme offers two kinds of jointly supervised PhD programmes:

  • Jointly supervised PhD without a PhD degree from VUB (equivalent to the PhD exchange or guest student at VUB).
  • Jointly supervised PhD for a student who wishes to obtain double PhD degrees from both VUB and his/her home university in China based on the agreement between two universities and two supervisors. In this case, an agreement will be signed between two promoters (or supervisors) at VUB and a Chinese university for a specific PhD student. The application follows the same procedure as a PhD candidate mentioned above. Please feel free to contact us for more information.

Note: According to the new policy of CSC, the Chinese promoter of jointly supervised PhD students can apply for a one-month scholarship to visit the promoter in VUB.
