Prof. Dr. Abied Alsulaiman

Dr Abied Alsulaiman is professor of Arabic at KU Leuven, Antwerp campus. He is also a co-founder of ‘Arabic Translators International’ (ATI), an international association uniting translators of Arabic worldwide and editor of the English-language series, ATI Publications, issued by the Association.

At KU Leuven (Antwerp campus) he lectures in history of Arabic culture, legal translation, business translation and interpreting. He is also in charge of evaluating candidate court interpreters and translators (Arabic-Dutch) in Antwerp.

His research interests cover issues of legal translation related to the various legal systems that use Arabic and arise within the Dutch-speaking Belgian legal system and subsequently in the legal system in the Netherlands, along with their system bound legal terminologies. His research includes the following areas: translation studies and translation technology; legal translation and legal terminology (Arab states, Belgium and the Netherlands); Wiretap interpreting; literary and religious translation; Arabic language and linguistics; Islamic studies and history; Semitic languages and linguistics; Hebrew Studies and Judeo-Arabic literature.

Prof. Dr. Andrea Facchin

Andrea Facchin is Associate Professor of Arabic Language and Literature at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, Italy. He earned his PhD from the same institution, where he spearheads two key initiatives: the DAR Laboratory, dedicated to teaching Arabic as a foreign language, and CALI, an intermediate Arabic language certification developed for Italian learners in collaboration with the American Councils for International Education. Currently, he leads the Country Level Team Italy for the "Survey of Arabic Language Programs" project, a valuable endeavor funded by Qatar Foundation International. His international experience includes research stints in Finland, the Netherlands, and Tunisia.

Andrea has authored numerous articles on the Arabic language and its pedagogy. His acclaimed monograph, Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language: Origins, Developments and Current Directions (Amsterdam University Press, 2019), was recognized with the Ca' Foscari Research Award in 2019. His research interests span the history of Arabic language instruction, language assessment, modern and contemporary language policies in the Arab world, non-verbal communication, and cross-cultural understanding. He recently translated Ibrahim Darghuthi's Le palme muoiono in piedi from Arabic into Italian

Prof. Dr. Jill Surmont

Jill Surmont is a professor of language teaching methodology within the teacher training programme at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB). She has been working for years on CLIL and teaching pupils who are not (highly) proficient in the language of instruction. She always tries to strengthen the bridge between scientific insights, the actual classroom practice and, if possible, policy. She is currently the principal investigator of the Europe Horizon research project called “Pluridentities”, in which she and five other European partners are investigating ways to protect and stimulate the linguistic capital and identities among pupils in Europe through inclusive policy-making and classroom practices

Prof. Dr. Najib George Awad

Najib George Awad (Dr. Phil; Dr. Theol. Habil): 

an American (originally from Syria) university Professor and Academic scholar in history of theological and inter-religious thought and Comparative theology and religious thought, and he is an author and a poet. He isan Associate Research at the Center for Comparative Theology and Social issues (CTSI), Bonn University, Germany, and Associate Research at the Institute for Eastern Christian Studies (IvOC), Radboud University Nijmegen, Netherlands. Until 2021, he was the Professor of Christian Theology and Eastern Christian Thought and the Director of the PhD Program in Islamic Studies and Christian-Muslim Relations at Hartford International University of Religion and Peace (HIU), Connecticut USA. had his first PhD from King’s College University of London, UK (2007) and his second Dr. Theol. Habil. from the Philipp University of Marburg, Germany (2014).

Dr. Feyza Altınkamış

Dr. Feyza Altinkamis is an affiliated researcher at the Linguistics and Literary Studies Department of VUB and co-founder of the Institute for Turkish Studies, Integration and Research. Her main research expertise lies in early childhood multilingualism, family language policy and planning, and heritage/home language acquisition and education, with a particular focus on the family context. In addition to her academic work, she is an active teacher in the field of heritage/home language education. Her primary interest is in transferring academic research findings into classroom practice, particularly within heritage/home language education.

Dr. Sayf Shems

 Dr Sayf Shems holds a PhD in Letters, Languages, and Translation Studies from ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles).

His academic background also includes a Master's degree in Modern Languages and Letters, Oriental specialization, with a focus on the Arab-Muslim world (advanced level), obtained at ULB. Having grown up in Iraq and completed my elementary, secondary, and undergraduate studies in that country, he possesses a deep understanding of Arabic language, history, and literature, from the pre-Islamic era to the present day.

Currently, he teaches Arabic courses at ULB. This role has honed his ability to teach complex linguistic and cultural concepts.
